Newborough Forest & Llanddwyn Island - Anglesey Tour

Sometimes a visit to a place you've never been to can blow your mind.

That's exactly what my visit to Llanddwyn Island did to me on this trip.

I hadn't planned to come here, well, not for a while anyway.

But the weather God's intervened for sure. The island of Anglesey was the only place in the UK that was predicted to have even remotely decent hiking weather. So I drove the 2 hours to Anglesey and headed for Newborough Nature Reserve on the coast of Anglesey.

And what a place I discovered!!! The forest here boasts a thriving habitat for the red squirrel and winding walking paths. It also boasts a fabulous beach with ample parking.

But the jewel of the day? Llanddwyn Island. A tidal island just up the beach. Now having been a good little hiker, I had checked the tide times online for the day and low tide wasn't meant to be until around 3pm. I had arrived just before lunch and Neptune had also smiled on me. For as I got further up the beach. I saw a clear path to the island!!! And just like that..... I was on the island.
An island steeped in myth and beauty in equal measure. The island is named after St Dwynwen, the Welsh version of St Valentines.... The myth goes that she was promised to another man, but fell in love with a man
called Maelon. When he found she was to marry another he attacked her and for his sin, was frozen in a block of ice. Dwynwen ran away to pray where an angel gave her 3 wishes. She defrosted Maelon, chose
to be allowed to help people unhappy in love and finally that she never be married........

The island is stunning. Beautiful green water, views over to Snowdonia and back along the beach, 2 lighthouses, an old church and a couple of old crosses. There are also wild ponies on the island.

I must confess I had every intention of walking the woods, but I got so caught up on the wonders of the island, I'll have to make a return trip to experience them as they too look stunning.

If you've never been here I urge you to go. It took my breath away.
