Welcome to Lexington, MO – where the west was started!

Lexington is situated on a prominent point of the Missouri River at the crossroads of several well known trails and roads. Starting with Lewis and Clark, who camped in the area, then later with the Santa Fe Trail and the National Road, Lexington has been the center of the old west.

Lexington is where the North met the South in the Civil War, where beautiful Antebellum homes still abound today with four historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places. The Battle of Lexington, popularly known as “The Battle of the Hemp Bales”, was fought in Lexington. A cannonball from the battle still can be seen on one of the columns of the Lafayette County Courthouse.
