This summer, as part of the flagship "Digital Gandhara" project, Harvard FAS CAMLab undertook the digital preservation and reconstruction of representative Buddhist art sites across the Gandhara region, tracing the westward journey of the 7th-century monk Xuanzang.

By layering Xuanzang’s 7th-century travelogue “Records of the Western Regions” (大唐西域记) with early archaeological surveys, historic photographs, and modern reports, the "Digital Gandhara" project team employs a multidisciplinary approach to retrace the past and digitally revive spaces once central to the transmission of Buddhism.

The team digitally captured iconic locations—Bamiyan, Hadda, Taxila, Shah-ji-ki Dheri, Takht-i-Bahi, Sahri Bahlol, Jamal Garhi, and more—creating immersive experiences that blend modern visualization technologies with rich ancient history.

Moving forward, the "Digital Gandhara" project will continue its mission to preserve and share this radiant cultural heritage. We aim to develop virtual interactive platforms, publish catalogues, and host public events—all designed to illuminate Gandhara's pivotal role along the Silk Road and in the transmission of Buddhism.
