Kris explains what a VPAT is and its purpose in accessibility reporting. VPAT stands for Voluntary Product Accessibility Template—a standardized document used internationally to account for and report on accessibility. Buyers ask for VPATs and ACRs to evaluate the accessibility of products and services.

An ACR or Accessibility Conformance Report is just a filled-in and completed VPAT. You provide the ACR to buyers, users, and customers of your products and services so they can assess accessibility.

Note on terminology: VPAT is often used in reference to an ACR, but there's no confusion—when someone requests a VPAT, they're really asking for an ACR. Otherwise they'd just be asking for a blank document. VPAT is the blank template and ACR is the completed template.

The purpose of these documents is to create a standardized way to report on accessibility for different standards like WCAG, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and EN 301549. VPAT editions ensure everyone is on the same page without different reporting methods. An ACR provides a quick way for buyers and users to assess and compare accessibility of products and services.
