The Gauteng Province's 3rd Quarter Crime Statistics for 2022/23 covering the period of 1st of October 31st December 2022 showed that the province has seen an increase in cases such as rape, murder and other serious crimes.

As part of its crime prevention boosting programmes, the Gauteng Provincial Government will from today deploy 6000 crime prevention wardens to different crime hotspots and business precincts.

The initiative was unveiled by the Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi and has seen previously unemployed and qualifying young people trained in multi-policing disciplines including Gender Based Violence and community patrolling.

The over R40 million project has received mixed reactions with some businesses and crime prevention organisations including the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) welcoming the move.

To talk more on this, we are joined by Richard Mamabolo, Spokesperson of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union.
