Breast Abscess
A breast abscess is a painful build-up of pus in the breast caused by an infection.
It mainly affects women who are breastfeeding.
A painful, red and warm breast
A lump or swelling in your breast

Cause
A breast abscess can form if you have a breast infection (called mastitis) and it's not treated quickly. (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus)
Lactational mastitis- commonly affected
Hematoma
Non lactational breast abscess- due to duct ectasia &
periductal mastitis
Other Factor- Diabetes, AIDS & chronic illness

Symptoms
A severe painful, swollen, hot red tender mass on the breast is usual.
Soft cystic fluctuant swelling felt in breast.(May rupture through skin)
Other symptoms include high grade fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting.
If Throbbing pain, fever with chills & rigors present- Immediate Drainage.

Diagnosis-

Physical examination
Pus Culture & sensitivity

Treatment-
Lactational Breast Abscess-
Not to feed with affected Breast
Antibiotics (cloxacillin 500mg) are the first therapy used.
Anti-inflammatory- Ibuprofen 400mg etc.

Non Lactational B.A.-
Antibiotics- Metronidazole 400mg

Most women- need an incision & drainage.
