Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award.
Born on 31 January 1923 in Himachal Pradesh, he belonged to a proud military family. On 3rd November 1947, during the Battle of Badgam (Kashmir), he led his company of the 4 Kumaon Regiment against overwhelming odds, fighting to the last man and last round. His sacrifice saved Srinagar and ensured the safety of Kashmir.
