Outdoors enthusiasts may see fewer recreational opportunities in Tacoma as park staff are reduced by more than 10% to offset a budget crunch.

Parks Tacoma plans to lay off some workers, give others voluntary separation packages, and leave even more vacant positions unfilled.

Staffing amounts to one of the largest expenses for the agency, and the district is staring at an $8 million shortfall due to lower-than-projected revenues and higher expenses.

To achieve the necessary reductions, 14 staff members have been laid off, 10 employees agreed to separation packages, and hiring will be paused on 25 open positions.
