This video shows how to mount a Micro-Air EasyStart soft starter externally on a Trane XR heat pump.

I installed these soft start modules to help my Generac whole home generator handle starting both of my air-conditioning units in the summertime if the power goes out. 

The 4-ton unit has an LRA of 130. When I tried measuring the start-up amps before installing the EasyStart, the meter read over 100 A. As you can see in the video, upon installing the EasyStart module, the peak amps were about 45, and after the second start, the peak amps were about 30.
