The swan pair who has come around here for about 15 years has split. All that is left is the pen swan, the female bird. She is as friendly as ever, but likely her mate was killed in one of the territory battles. They left after their last nest on this canal about two years ago. Then there was this construction all around here and I guess they decided that was enough and likely tried to broaden their territory, as we saw back then with some swan battles. Now it is relaxed here again but it is just her, the pen swan that comes around, for weeks now.

This lone swan is here daily, often for hours on end. She will also sleep here a lot. I feed her grain and she is very friendly and not aggressive at all. She knows us. She tolerates the duck couple who also hangs around here. This pen swan will still fend off other larger waterbirds, like Canadian geese that come along. This is her territory again. We will keep her company.

If a pen swan (female) loses her partner, she may find a new mate, even if she is 15 years old. Swans are known to mate for life, but if one of the pair dies, the remaining bird may seek a new mate to continue breeding and nesting. And may I add, for mere companionship and strength in numbers for defending the territory.

Mute swans, which are the most common swan species in Europe and North America, can live up to 20-30 years in the wild. The oldest known mute swan lived to be at least 25 years old in the wild. So are swan here could go for many more years!

So, maybe not a total disaster, as there is a chance she will find another mate. Although swans are said to mate for life, that is not always the case. When and if one passes early, then she could partner up with another cob swan and nest again. There is always hope! She looks very heathy and still has a bit of her signature reddish or orange color on her head.
