(10 May 2019) Captain Joe Fisher has been flying "warbirds" for 25 years and the FlaBob Express for about five years and says "it's the funnest thing I fly, and I fly a lot of airplanes".
Captain Fisher was participating in a World War II vintage aircraft flyover of the DC area on Friday, as part of a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.
Seven World War II planes from The D-Day Squadron honored veterans by flying over Arlington National Cemetery after taking off from the Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick, Maryland.
The planes were in Washington as part of The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) 80th Anniversary two day "Fly-In" celebration.
Planes participating in the flyover included six C-47 "Dakota" transport planes, known as DC-3s commercially and one T-6 "Texan".
The specific planes at AOPA's event are the Placid Lassie, Miss Virginia, Flabob Express, Betsy's Biscuit Bomber, Clipper Tabitha May and Virginia Ann.
The Flabob Express which Captain Fisher flies is a DC-3 - a 26,000-pound aircraft that he describes as a "taildragger," "that may have may have flown the royal family. It was in the European theater during the war."
He says "while the airplane is 75 years old. It's in great shape."
Next month The D-Day Squadron will fly from the US to Normandy to participate in celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
