Lao Cai is a city in Northern Vietnam and the capital of Lao Cai Province. Lao Cai borders the Chinese city prefecture of Hekou in Yunnan Province in Southwest China.

Lao Cai is located on the Red River (Hong Ha) and the Nậm Thi which is 260 km northwest of Hanoi. The city is a timber market town on the Haiphong railway.

The city is 2 km from the Chinese border.

Most travelers see nothing more of Lao Cai than the local train station. And why would you stay when you can quickly get to beautiful Sapa from here. An area blessed with beautiful rice terraces and excellent opportunities for long treks through the mountains.

What many people do not know is that in the vicinity of Lao Cai many traditional markets are held by the approximately 20 ethnic minorities that live here. An impressive spectacle that I will tell you more about later in this article.

Around Lao Cai you can also enjoy impressive mountain landscapes and if Sapa had not existed, it would probably have been the base for all tourists.
