I have been utilizing verbal techniques with many pets over the years. I found that with reptiles, whom are thought by many to have a more 'primitive' cogitative ability do actually respond to vocal stimuli. Basically It is a method by which to calm an animal to alert it that you are about to have a friendly interaction such as a handling session. The other method is to alert a reptile such as a Ball Python, that it is about to be fed. I began performing this method with Charlie the moment he was brought home. The snake knows that when he hears his name called in a repeated gentle manner that it is about to be handled. When reaching in he stays in hiding remaining concealed as these shy snakes usually do, but there is never any aggressive resistance to being grasped and hoisted out. Alternately, he has also learned that when he hears my imitated sounds of rodent squeaks which are only performed prior to a feeding, that a meal is imminent. He will in a few moments after hearing the squeaks peek out from his concealed position in the assumed 'strike position' and commence to prowl the enclosure! I have found the name calling method useful in the past with my Iguana to calm him reducing the occurrence of defensive postures when reaching in.
