Barotrauma is what a fish experiences when an atmospheric pressure change causes their air bladder to become enlarged, or inflate. This scenario commonly occurs with Smallmouth Bass during bass tournaments when these fish are caught from deep water. A fish that is experiencing barotrauma requires intervention using a technique called 'fizzing' to release this air pressure. This short video is a demonstration of how quickly an angler can treat a fish for barotrauma using a fizzing technique. In this video I use 1.5 inch (~4.5mm), 18 gauge livestock needle to release the excess air from the fishes air bladder. This process is quick and has proven to be an effective mitigation technique for barotrauma. Bass Anglers should know that if fish are released immediately after being caught they do not normally experience barotrauma. This only happens when fish are caught deep and kept for a period of time, such as a catch and release bass tournament.
