Frogs (and Mice):
Hook: C52S BLN (Size 2)
Thread: 3.0 Superfly or 3.0 Copper Brown Danville or similar
Tail: Sili Worms (4 barred hackle feathers paired back to back for the frog)
Body: Deer Hair (tips up, stacked and flared)
Eyes: Rattail Cord or Paracord with melted ends
Legs: Medium Rubber Legs (Optional)
Head: Craft Foam (folded over, hook eye through, trimmed to shape)

Description:
These patterns are a combination of conventional deer hair poppers and gurglers with craft foam heads to add shape and floatation. The tails, color, size and the shape of the head can be altered to produce two different top-water offerings while using the exact same tying techniques. Tying these patterns on different size hooks with minor variations will result in and assortment of bugs that can be used for almost any freshwater, carnivorous gamefish.
In an effort not to simply tie examples of standard patterns (there are hundreds of those out there), I am continuing to share my one-off stuff and variants. The departures worth noting in this pattern include the melted cord eyes, the use of Sili Worms as a tail on the mouse patterns, and the method of using craft foam to produce a functional and somewhat realistic profile as the head on these flies.
While not done in a studio, I hope the videos are informative and enjoyable. All in all, the result is good enough to share and this pattern will catch fish. On top of that, it is cool to catch fish with something that is not in everyone else’s fly box.
As usual, tying this pattern is easier than I make it look. Like everything else, I am standing on the shoulders of those who came before me. Someone may have already “invented” something just like this and I have shared many of my ideas in other forums. I am not looking for fanfare. This method serves a purpose and is my way of giving back to a sport that has meant so much to me for more than six decades. Thanks for looking. 😊
