I remember giants born in time past,
Those who long ago fostered me;
I remember nine worlds, nine wood-ogresses,
The famous Measuring-Tree beneath the earth.

It was in early times when Ymir made his home...
The bright kettle turns before the hall
Of the Daughter of Mimir, and the life-nourisher
Plays over the pale ones;

Now Garmr bays loud before Gnipahellir...

The sons of Mimir play, but the Measure of Fate is kindled
At the ancient Gjallarhorn.

This is the foundational voice of Norse mythology. The poem begins with the völva (seeress) demanding silence (Hljóðs bið ek) from all divine beings, establishing her supreme, timeless authority. Her prophecy is a memory of cosmic origins: the primeval giant Ymir, the nine worlds, and the world-tree Yggdrasil (mjötviðr mæran).
