What was the difference between Rebel Alliance or Alliance to Restore the Republic of the Original Trilogy with the Resistance of the Sequel Trilogy?

CORRECTION: Due to this video being released before The Last Jedi, the reference of The First Order only having 10,000 troops after Starkiller is now no longer canon. The correct number of First Order troops has been corrected in my latest Empire vs First Order video. However, regardless of this short reference, it still doesn't detract at all of how tiny the Resistance army was.
