The story is about the remarkable and harrowing experience of Dr. Leonid Rogozov, a Soviet doctor who found himself in a life-threatening situation during his participation in the first wintering at the new Soviet Antarctic station, Novolazarevskaya, in 1961.

Dr. Rogozov fell seriously ill with appendicitis while stationed in the middle of the polar desert. With no immediate access to medical assistance or the possibility of evacuation due to adverse weather conditions, he faced a critical decision: attempt to perform an appendectomy on himself or succumb to the peritonitis that would inevitably follow.

Despite the daunting circumstances and knowing the potential risks, Dr. Rogozov opted to perform the surgery on himself. With the help of his fellow polar explorers, who acted as assistants during the operation, he meticulously planned the procedure and gathered the necessary tools and supplies. He administered local anesthesia, made an incision in his abdomen, and proceeded to remove his own appendix.

The self-surgery lasted for nearly two hours, during which Dr. Rogozov faced numerous challenges, including physical weakness, limited visibility, and the fear of making a mistake. However, he successfully completed the operation, saving his own life.

Following the operation, Dr. Rogozov recovered, and he and his team had to endure further challenges due to inclement weather, which prolonged their stay at the station. Eventually, they were rescued and returned to the Soviet Union.

Dr. Leonid Rogozov's incredible story gained widespread recognition, and he was hailed as a hero. He was compared to Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, as both individuals achieved unprecedented feats at the age of 27 and came from working-class backgrounds.

Although Dr. Rogozov did not embark on another Antarctic expedition, he continued his medical career, pursued further education, and worked as a surgeon in various clinics in Leningrad. He passed away in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of courage and determination.
