Now that the dry months are getting even drier, I decided to solve two problems in one stroke. I need up to 10,000 litres of #rainwater on tap for my operations at Greenpete Grange. And an efficient, eco-friendly toilet purely for convenience 😜 All solved with a bit of work and investment.

My hand-built, #ecofriendly outside Loo, houses a #green-disposal dry #composting #toilet. Have a close look at how dry #CompostingToilets work, producing useful human liquid #fertiliser. Note that untreated human faeces must either be properly disposed of or treated and recycled as safe sewage sludge. Follow government codes of practice in order to protect humans, pets and the environment.

The last thing we want is untreated sewage around, so we'll look at ways to avoid that. It's best to assume that your compost toilet faeces are dangerous to health, and to act accordingly.

Humanure from a composting toilet hasn’t actually composted, therefore it could contain bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. Meticulous hygiene is very important here. Wear gloves, protective clothing and a face mask, when emptying or handling your compost loo. Wash your hands.

I use the pee for fertilizer; the rest is buried deep on my own undeveloped land. Human bacteria can cause all kinds of illnesses. It’s not OK to dispose of your poop in public spaces, down drains, in gardens, or anywhere near places where people and pets might go.

It could be argued that the weather pays sewage bills; my giant #domestic #rainwater #harvesting tank system (#RHS) collectively holds up to 9,000 litres of #water, in addition to the many #waterbutts which viewers have seen around my property. Tap that for handwashing in your dry composting toilet, and you're quids in.

Even if you don't use aged pee for fertilizer, the benefits and cost-savings with a dry compost toilet are manifold. They are convenient if you get caught short in the garden; there are no mains water costs because they don't need water. And any washing water you need is collected by a simple rain water harvesting System (RHS).

#Compost toilets achieve nitrogen cycling in situ without additives or energy inputs. One aim of composting is to preserve #nitrogen, which can be used for #plant growth rather than it being lost as gases (including the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide) or leached as nitrate.
