JOKULSARLON
Jökulsárlón is a large, breathtaking glacial lake in southeast Iceland. The expansive lagoon stretches over 11 square miles, and it continues to grow as the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier continues to melt and recede. Over the past 50 years, the lake has actually quadrupled in size.
It does take some time to drive from the airport or Reykjavik (about 5 hours or so), so we had to head out super early! However, it is a super scenic drive. You can see the sun rise, and you can stop at a number of really beautiful and interesting sites along the way. During our drive out there, we stopped at:
the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon ( • Walk and View of the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon... ), and
the Skeiðará Bridge Monument ( • Remembering a Tragic Moment: Visiting the ... ).
On the ride back, we stopped at the Breiðármörk trail and viewed the Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon, which was just awe-inspiring. There, we also saw these unique Aurora Huts (or floating igloos) for camping on the frozen lagoon!
Once you get to Jökulsárlón, you can walk around to get to different views of the glacial lake. Jökulsárlón borders the Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. Vatnajökull is Iceland's largest national park, and the second-largest national park in Europe. Thousands of people are drawn to Jökulsárlón every year, regardless of season, to see the baby blue icebergs, take a lagoon boat tour, and watch the seals.
We decided to hike up to the top of a large mound to get a high view of the entire lagoon. If you want to hike, there is a trail that goes between Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón which has unprecedented views and scenery. During the winter, the Lagoon is a popular spot for northern lights hunters, since it offers a great setting for beautiful pictures. It is quite the site to see with bright blue icebergs floating in the water. These icebergs are over 1,000 years old!
Many movies, tv shows, and music videos have used this area as a marvelous backdrop for filming. This includes James Bond films “Die Another Day” and “A View to a Kill”, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and the Amazing Race. Justin Bieber's “I'll Show You” music video was also recorded here.
The icebergs you see are either milky white or bright blue. The color you see is based on the air trapped within the ice and is a result of the reflection of light within the ice crystals. This glacial lake is reported to be the deepest lake in all of Iceland (about 814 feet deep). It is filled with fish that attract hundreds of seals.
Descending the mound, we walk to the edge of the lagoon. The stop is quite popular, so you can also take a break and grab a bite to eat. There is a small cafe, food trucks, and restrooms next to the parking lot. Once we get down to the beach area, we can get a close up look at pieces of ice that have floated across the lake.
After walking around the site, videoing, and taking pictures, cross the road to get to Diamond Beach.
DIAMOND BEACH
The icebergs from Jökulsárlón slowly melt and float out to the North Atlantic, eventually washing onto Breidamerkursandur, a black volcanic sand beach. The clear ice sparkles against the fine black sand looking like diamonds. Even in the summer, the glacial ice can be found on the shores of this beach. The sand is black, as it is sediment created by hot lava hitting the cold sea. It is super fine to the touch. Also washed up on shore are beautiful smooth round stones making this beach a must see on your visit. Definitely spend some time walking the beach, admiring the scenery, and the juxtaposition of chunks of ice against the lava sand. This is why Iceland is known as the Land of Ice and Fire!
