Описание к видео The $24 Million Marketing Scandal

McDonald's Monopoly marketing campaign turned into a multi-million dollar scandal after Jerome Jacobson began stealing the winning pieces.

Script
Yes, McDonald’s Monopoly was a multi-million dollar scam, masterminded by this guy. In 1989, Jerome Jacobson was head of security for the agency that ran McDonald’s monopoly game. It gave customers a chance to win money and prizes through peel off pieces on certain packages - or so they thought. Jacobson’s job was to transport the high-ticket winning game pieces in a briefcase with tamper proof seals while under constant surveillance by an independent auditor. However, in the 1990s, at the same time prizes ballooned from thousands to millions of dollars, the supplier of tamper proof seals mistakenly sent an order directly to Jacobson and the temptations were too much. He snuck to airport bathrooms as he traveled to packaging centers, took the winning pieces, replaced them with losers, and resealed the briefcase. Knowing he couldn’t redeem them himself, Jacobson recruited people including his butcher, nephew, and a man he met in an airport - selling them winning pieces worth millions for up to $50k a pop. All was going to plan until the FBI got an anonymous tip from someone familiar with the large web of recruits. Eyes turned to Jacobson as they slowly unraveled a cluster of high-dollar winners in Georgia and Florida - his current home and where he previously worked as a police officer. The investigation led to Jacobson’s arrest in 2001 and eventually more than 50 others after swindling more than $24 million from the campaign between 1989 - 2001.
