The traditional definition of a dumpling is any kind of ground meat or vegetable, wrapped in a dough made of rice or wheat, and then steamed, fried, or boiled. They can also be filled with a sweet mixture. We most commonly know dumplings as momo, but almost every state in India has their own version of the dumpling. We tried a few varieties of dumplings everyone should try from across the country.
Modak from Maharashtra is hugely popular during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. This dumpling is the favouriye sweet of Ganeshji and nhe is called Modakapriya for the same reason. Modaks are stuffed with grated coconut mixed with jaggery and cardomom powder and wrapped with a soft rice flour dough and then steamed. The Kerala quivalent of Modak is called Kozhukattai or Kollukattai in Tamil. Also known as Kadubu in Kannada and Kudumu in Telugu, this is a dumpling you will keep coming back to.
Siddu from Himachal Pradesh is made of fermented wheat dough stuffed with walnuts, poppy seeds and little bit of green chutney and steamed. Served with a green / red chutney and ghee, this is a heart dumplings hugely popular in Kull, Manali, Mandi amnd Shimla.
Almost every state in India has it’s own dumpling/s. Like the Goan Patoleo or Holle which steamed in Jackfruit leaves stuffed with a coconut, palm jaggery and chana. Or various kinds of Pitha, which is popular is the north western side of India.
