Ellis Island lies in the middle of New York Harbor, between Manhattan and Jersey City, a small island that once carried the weight of millions of dreams. From 1892 to 1954, it served as America’s primary immigration station. More than twelve million people arrived here by ship, their first sight the Statue of Liberty standing just across the water.

Originally little more than a sandbar called Oyster Island, it was expanded with landfill from the construction of New York’s subway tunnels, growing to over twenty-seven acres. The red-brick buildings that still stand were designed in the early 1900s in French Renaissance style, a symbol of national pride and progress.

For many newcomers, the island was both hope and ordeal. Families were separated for medical exams, names were recorded or changed, and the decision to enter or be sent back was made within a day. Nearly two percent of arrivals were turned away, while the rest stepped onto American soil for the first time.

After closing in 1954, Ellis Island fell silent for decades until its restoration and reopening as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1990. Today, surrounded by the skylines of Manhattan, Jersey City, and Brooklyn, it stands as a living archive of migration — the threshold where America’s story became truly global.
