Bangladesh has recently achieved considerable success in producing fruits. According to the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), fruit production in Bangladesh has increased at an average rate of 11 percent per year for the past 18 years, which has not happened in any other country in the world.
Over the past decade, at least 20 foreign fruits have arrived in this country. These are Strawberry, Dragon Fruit, Malta, Rambutan, Sour Soap or tok aata, Alobokhara, Mangosteen, Canistel or Zaman Fruit, Passion Fruit, Persimmon, Avocado, Cocoa, Grape, Peach fruit, Cherry, Longan, Saudi Khorma, Bread Fruit, Shantol, Rock Mellon, etc.

দেশে প্রতিবছর বিভিন্ন ধরনের যে পরিমাণ ফল উৎপাদিত হয় তা দিয়ে মোট চাহিদার মাত্র ৪৪% মেটানো যায়। ফলের চাহিদা মেটানোর জন্য প্রতি বছর প্রায় ১০ হাজার কোটি টাকার ফল আমদানি করতে হয় বিদেশ থেকে।
দেশের মাটিতেই এখন বাণিজ্যিক ভিত্তিতে চাষ করা হচ্ছে বিদেশী ফল, যেমনঃ মাল্টা, কমলা, থাই পেয়ারা, থাই কুল, থাই পেঁপে, স্ট্রবেরি, ড্রাগন, মেলন, অ্যাভোকাডো, রাম্বুটান—এই ১০ রকম ফল। স্বাদ ও ফলন ভালো পাওয়ায় আমদানি করা ফলের সঙ্গে প্রতিযোগিতা করে ১৫-২০ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত বাজার দখল করে নিয়েছে এগুলো। আমদানি ও দেশে উৎপাদন মিলিয়ে এসব ফল পাওয়া যায় বারো মাস। দামও মধ্যবিত্তের নাগালের মধ্যে। দেশের মাটিতেই আশা জাগাচ্ছে বিদেশি যে ৫টি ফল, তা নিয়েই আমাদের আজকের আয়োজন।
