Tying an Articulated Short Strike Sculpin Fly Using Hareline SQUISHENILLE.

Sculpins are a type of fish that belongs to the superfamily Cottoidea in the order Scorpaeniformes. As of 2006, this superfamily contains 7 families, 94 genera, and 387 species. Sculpins occur in many types of habitat, including ocean and freshwater zones. They are also known as bullhead, sea scorpion, and double uglies. Sculpins have these distinct characteristics:
Flattened head
Large frog-like mouth and eyes
Scaleless body
Large fan-shaped pectoral fins
Two closely-spaced dorsal fins (one spiny, one soft)
Thoracic pelvic fins
Rounded tail fin
No anal spines
Wide, heavy heads
One or more spines on the gill covers

Sculpins are most abundant in the North Pacific and are an important part of freshwater ecosystems, especially river ecosystems. They are an important link in the food chain and are a favorite food source for larger fish like brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout.
