Описание к видео Listening to Learn Echoes of the Past: Earth's Journey through Mega to Microfossils

About the Talk:
This presentation explores the fascinating journey of Earth's history
through the study of fossils—from gigantic whale, dinosaur bones to
microscopic ancient life forms. It introduces learners to the science of
palaeontology, explaining how fossils are formed, the conditions
required for fossilisation, and the different modes of preservation. It
highlights the importance of studying fossils to understand past life,
ancient environments, and evolutionary changes over time. By
examining both body and trace fossils, the presentation provides
insights into the diversity of prehistoric life and offers a window into
Earth’s dynamic geological past.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Rahul Mohan, Group Leader, NCPOR, Goa obtained his Bachelor’s and
Master’s from Department of Geology, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). His
Ph.D. from BHU focused on settling biogenic material, particularly planktic
foraminifera from the Bay of Bengal.
He joined the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa in 2003,
and currently serves as Group Director and Scientist-G in Polar Sciences.
Dr. Mohan initiated the Southern Ocean program at NCPOR and pioneered
polar micropaleontological studies focussing on multiple microfossils which
include foraminifera, coccolithophores and marine diatoms for climate
reconstruction. He has supervised seven Ph.D’s in this field, emphasizing the
role of microfossils in understanding polar climate. His research offers valuable
insights into the Southern Ocean, Antarctic lakes and Arctic processes. Key
highlights of his career include studies on Antarctic and Arctic sea ice, climate
linkages, Antarctic paleolimnology and the discovery of new coccolithophore
species from the Southern Ocean.
Dr Mohan is passionate about Scientific Social Responsibility (Outreach) and
gives a lot of invited talks to Colleges, University teachers, professionals and
policy makers on Antarctica, Polar Climate Change, Past climate variability,
Southern Ocean, Diversity of plankton in polar waters etc. He is also currently
taking care of International Cooperation at NCPOR.
Dr. Mohan is India's Alternate Delegate to the Scientific Committee on
Antarctic Research and serves as the National Coordinator for the Asian
Forum for Polar Sciences. In 2024, he was conferred with the National
Geoscience Award 2023 by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. In
2024, the Geological Society of India selected Dr. Mohan for the L. Rama Rao
Birth Centenary Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to polar
micropaleontology. He also received honours from the Ministry of Earth
Sciences in July 2007 and was awarded the Prof. C. Naganna Gold Medal by
the Mineralogical Society of India in March 2011.
