Warhammer 40,000 is set 38,000 years in the future. Humanity is ruled by a fascist theocratic empire called the Imperium of Man. But here's the twist - everyone else in the galaxy is WORSE. Chaos demons want to corrupt your soul. Orks just want to fight. Tyranids want to eat everything. Dark Eldar torture people to stay alive. There are no heroes. There is only war.
