I see a lot of discussion about positivity in fitness. It makes sense that some people find kindness refreshing in an industry that has a reputation of the "angry drill sergeant" approach.

My content is sometimes called positive or encouraging. I'm super honored by these comments, but I never specifically tried to be positive. I just wanted to talk about fitness, and I try to be accommodating to the different situations we all have. I do try to be polite and professional, but I never really thought it more than how others were. Thank you all as usual.

From this perspective, I think kindness and positivity can be wonderful motivators in fitness. They're exactly what some people need to form a habit and keep working. Plus, it feels nice to give and receive encouragement.

However, I'm usually careful to balance positivity with honesty. For example, if someone is new to fitness and just wants to get moving and learn more with no particular goal, then my response is "that's awesome." However, if someone has a specific goal (and asks me for advice), it may be a disservice for me not to give them authentic feedback. Something like "Great work so far, but those pushups by themselves may not be enough for your physique goals long-term. Here are some options you can try."

A common positivity criticism I see is that "it's not honest." However, I think we can be both honest and kind. Especially when solicited, this may be a good way to help people.

Similarly, if you prefer to give blunt feedback, it helps to consider

1.) If what you're saying is actually true. Just because it's blunt and your opinion doesn't mean it's true.
2.) If they asked for your advice. If they don't want it, then it may not be worth speaking up.
3.) If they know you actually want to help. Some people just criticize others to vent. Is this you? If not, do they know?

Different things work for different people. Ultimately, you don't have to do either one of these. However, when I don't know someone's situation, I tend to default a reasonable amount of honest positivity. It feels nicer and people seem more receptive.
