Statement from Chicago Community Activist Patrick Gibbons

Two weeks ago, I was interviewed by Chicago FOX 32, where I outlined a detailed plan to improve safety for all CTA riders. I strongly believe the CTA should establish its own dedicated police force—similar to how the USPS operates its Postal Police—to ensure consistent, specialized protection throughout the transit system.

In addition, I support implementing a licensed and trained armed security team to actively patrol train cars and platforms. As a lifelong Chicagoan and daily commuter, I want every rider to feel safe. Incidents like this should never happen again.

What occurred to this young woman was horrific. It was an evil, senseless act—an act of terror against someone simply trying to get home. Our leaders must prioritize public safety and hold offenders fully accountable under the law. For crimes of this magnitude, once guilt is proven in a court of law, the consequences should be severe to ensure justice and prevent future tragedies.
