We look at how to use BMW auto hold function on a BMW 520d. Knowing how to use the BMW auto hold function makes driving in slow stop start traffic so much easier. The auto hold is like an auto handbrake and stops the car from moving when you lift off the foot brake.

To use the BMW auto hold you simply push the auto hold button to illuminate the green light on the auto hold button and on the dashboard too. Once the auto hold is engaged then every time you stop the car with the foot brake the auto hold will hold the car until you push the gas pedal. This means that you don't have to use the electronic handbrake to hold the car or the foot brake.

Auto hold is not just a BMW feature, it is available on a wide range of cars. It is only available on automatic gearbox cars as this feature will only work with an auto box.
