Then structured and procedural programming appeared, and now that's the normal way of doing conditionals, and the previously widespread GOTO statements are widely considered an antipattern. When garbage collection first appeared, it was largely ignored outside academia. Then hardware got faster, and since the 1990s garbage collection has become the norm in industry.
