Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has confirmed that 16 officers of the Armed Forces will face a military court martial following allegations of serious indiscipline and an alleged coup plot.

According to the DHQ, the decision follows the conclusion of investigations by a Special Investigative Panel set up to probe the conduct of the affected officers. The panel reportedly found that the officers have cases to answer, including actions deemed contrary to military ethics and professional standards.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, said the move is part of the Armed Forces’ internal disciplinary process aimed at preserving unity, professionalism, and operational effectiveness. He stressed that the trials will be conducted strictly in line with the Armed Forces Act and relevant service regulations to ensure fairness and due process.

The development has reignited debate about civil-military relations, discipline within the ranks, and the military’s role in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
