After Chinese President Xi Jinping lifted the country’s strict COVID-19 restrictions in December 2022, many expected the Chinese economy to surge, but after a brief post-COVID bounce, it appears to be losing some of its vitality. What are the causes of this stagnation? That is a question of intense debate, and China’s ability to recover and the future of U.S. policy largely depend on how it is answered.
