On March 6, Lou Ottens died (https://www.wnpr.org/post/lou-ottens-...)  in Duizel in the Netherlands. He was 94. I don't think I had ever heard of Ottens before, but the news of his death quickly filled my social media feeds. Ottens, you see, invented the compact cassette in the 1960s.


There's a certain romance to the cassette tape, right? They're more fun than mp3s (https://www.imore.com/cassette-tapes-...) , for sure. And it turns out they're having a little mini resurgence (https://theconversation.com/audio-cas...)  right now.


Last year, cassette sales hit their highest mark since 2003 (https://www.bpi.co.uk/news-analysis/f...) . Some old, hard to find tapes sell for crazy prices (https://www.discogs.com/sell/list?for...) . Blank tapes still sell well (https://www.vice.com/en/article/epd7g...) . There are cassette-only record labels (https://thisandthattapes.com/) . There are even podcast episodes out on tape (  / a_first_of_its_kind_we_released_a_podcast_...  ) .
