A part of a bridge on National Highway 10 (NH10) near Melli, a border town between West Bengal and Sikkim, has been washed away by the swollen Teesta River. The collapse, captured on camera by a local, showed the bridge crumbling under the force of the floodwaters, with several onlookers gathered at the scene.

Sikkim has been lashed with incessant rains for days leading to flooding and landslides at multiple sections of the highway. NH10 is the only road connecting Sikkim with the rest of India.

The Sikkim government has also expressed deep concern over the condition of the highway. On June 18 the state's lone Lok Sabha member Indra Hang Subba, recalled briefing Roads and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari during his initial tenure about the erosion issues along the highway caused by dams on the Teesta River.

He also ensured of approaching the centre for prudent allocation and utilisation of funds earmarked for NH 10, and if necessary, will seek additional funding from the ministry.
