Growing up on the farm, we used to always use oats as our main nurse crop to establish the alfalfa we planted for our dairy cattle.  Oats worked well and we were able to have nice fields of alfalfa.

As a food plotter, I overseed many of my food plots with cereal rye every fall.  The benefit of rye, compared to oats, is that it doesn't winter kill and it sprouts back the following soring.

Knowing this, I wanted to try rye as my nurse crop for a clover mix that I wanted to plant this past spring.  I frost-seeded the blend right into the green rye.   Here were the results.
