This is the full version of my speech at Voice of Hospices 2025, themed “A Promise of Dignity, United in Care.”

Sharing this speech was one of the most emotional things I’ve ever done. It was my way of honouring my late daughter, Tijani, and expressing my gratitude to Hospis Malaysia, who gave her — and me — the gift of palliative care.

Palliative care is not just about easing symptoms.
It’s about honouring the whole person — helping patients live with comfort and dignity, and giving families the confidence to care with love instead of fear.

Bringing a patient to the hospital is not an easy task. Having a team of a doctor and nurse visit the patient at home is such a blessing for the patient and caregiver.

Nurse Nisha and Dr. Wai Fong treated Tijani like a person, not just a patient. Our conversations were beyond her condition and medication. They did provide medical support, but more importantly, they provided emotional support as well.

They taught me how to care for Tijani and what to expect as her end-of-life stage began.

Tijani's last few months at home was good. "Hospital care and comfort at home", as Tijani said.

She had a good quality of life despite her circumstances.
She lived a dignified life, and she left in peace.

I realised, while speaking that night, how much heavier my grief could have been if Tijani hadn’t had such a dignified, peaceful final chapter.
And a few days later, I realised something else — that speaking about her life, and her dignity, was healing for me too.
