By far "Seek and Destroy" is the most popular song off of Metallica's debut album Kill 'Em All.

It deserves this distinction for good reason. It opens with one of most identifiable metal guitar riffs ever written.

In this Seek and Destroy guitar lesson series I will demonstrate how to play all the riffs of the song as well as the guitar solo note-for-note.

Of all the Metallica songs, "Seek and Destroy" is one of the easiest to play. At least when we are referring to the main riffs of the song.

The classic opening riff uses hammer-ons with muted notes to create one of the catchiest riffs you will ever play.

From there all of the rhythms are straight forward and quite fun and easy to play. There really shouldn't be anything in the first video lesson that any upper beginner level player can't handle.

In the second video lesson I will tackle the fast middle section which includes the one fast riff of the song and that crazy guitar solo.

This fast riff will require a nice and relaxed picking hand technique since you have to play lot of rapid downstrokes in succession. If you can keep your picking hand wrist and forearm relaxed you will be able to get this riff down much faster.

For the solo, the difficulty level is raised quite a bit. It starts with a couple of straight forward, albeit very fast blues based rock licks. Following those licks we are treated to a very uncommon sounding lick that uses a bit of the chromatic scale and ends with an out of tune note. Kirk Hammett has repeatedly mentioned in interviews that it was a bum note that they actually couldn't afford to go back a fix at the time.

After that comes an absolutely insane sounding descending guitar lick that seems to come out of nowhere. This lick sounds pretty erratic on the record, which will make it very difficult to recreate note-for-note. You can tell it is exactly the kind of sound that Kirk Hammett was going for. It is simply the sound of chaos. There is a pattern to this lick so make sure you learn that first then just let it fly. That is all Kirk Hammett is really doing anyway.

The rest of the solo contains some improvisatory blues licks followed by some fast, but manageable descending and ascending pentatonic sequences.

Seek and Destroy was actually the very first studio recording that Metallica ever did and it is still a crowd favorite. Let's see if you got what it takes to do it justice. :)
