Are your pool's chlorine levels zeroing out, even after adding more to the water? Here are three reasons why this happens and how to fix it:

#1. The sun is destroying your chlorine. It takes just 17 minutes of direct sunlight to destroy HALF of your pool's chlorine. Cyanuric acid protects your chlorine from breaking down in direct sunlight. So check your CYA levels. It should be between 30 and 50 PPM. Too low, and sunlight burns up your chlorine. Too high, and your chlorine can't work effectively.

#2. There's too much combined chlorine in the water. When chlorine combines with contaminants, it becomes combined chlorine. This doesn't sanitize as well and can't keep up with contaminants. Add non-chlorine shock once a week to break up combined chlorine and help your free chlorine work better.

#3. Debris is eating up your chlorine. Leaves, twigs, and dirt in your water consume your chlorine fast. Skim your pool every other day and check your pump and skimmer basket to prevent contaminants from using up your sanitizer.
