How To Adjust A/C Belt Tension

Описание к видео How To Adjust A/C Belt Tension

My 1976 C3 Corvette Stingray started making the wrong noises every time I turned the a/c on. Luckily, a loose belt in need of a bit of tension was the cause. Something that can be easily remedied.

A squealing belt ranges from annoying to a possible serious issue. And the lack of belt tension is usually the culprit, and the easiest one to solve. From there, things quickly go downhill from worn belts to misaligned pulleys to failing bearings.

In my case, the fact that the a/c belt "chirped" every time I turned it on while driving, suggested a loose belt was the be blamed, although I had a similar situation when one of the many alternators I've replaced made a similar noise. Anyway, I am keeping my finger crossed that things will be easier this time.

I tightened the a/c belt and then took the Vette out for a test drive to see if the problem persisted. Luckily, it did not, so again I hope it is not a bearing-related issue.

Making the adjustments is relatively simple and can be done in less than 15 minutes. All you need are a couple of open-end wrenches, 9/16 inches in my case, and a long prybar or screwdriver.

The video shows how I made mine taut.

A belt dressing spray may also help quiet down noisy belts while making the rubber more grippy. However, I have not used one in quite some time.

Spraying something like WD-40 on the belts and pulleys is not a good idea. You do not want to apply petroleum-based lubricants to rubber.

Instead, a silicone or Teflon product formulated for belts should be used.

Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻
