Through firsthand memoirs, sworn testimony, and historical records, we follow the experiences of Rachel Plummer, Olive Oatman, Matilda Lockhart, and Cynthia Ann Parker. We explore the 1836 raid on Fort Parker, the isolation and destruction of the Oatman family in 1851, the condition of captives returned during negotiations, and the long-term consequences of “rescue” after years—or decades—of forced assimilation.
