Falla composed this piece - undoubtedly the most ambitious work of his first period - in Madrid in 1903. It was written for a competition organized by the Madrid Conservatory under its director Tomas Breton and held in 1904. There were 24 entries; the first prize was awarded to Enrique Granados, while Falla at least received an honourable mention. The Andalusian vein is scarcely present in this sonata movement whose construction is A-B-A-C-B-A-coda. The virtuosity and elan of the Allegro con brio is in the tradition established by Chopin and requires a fully fledged pianist to do it justice. Despite this, the piece does not lack lyrical moments similar to those found in the Piezas espafiolas (which Falla began working on in Madrid in 1905, after the premiere of the Allegro de concierto).
