Danish Waffen-SS Volunteers: Free Corps Denmark in World War II

Denmark in World War II saw a formation of Danes in the Waffen-SS. The Danish Waffen-SS volunteers mostly served in Free Corps Denmark (Frikorps Danmark). This Danish Legion was under command by Christian Peter Kryssing and later by Christian Frederik von Schalburg. Recruitment was facilitated by the National Socialist Workers' Party of Denmark (Danmarks Nationalsocialistiske Arbejderparti/ DNSAP). Von Schalburg was killed in action during the fight for the Demyansk Pocket. Later the Danish legionnaires fought in the Battle of Velikiye Luki. In June 1943 the Danish legion was disbanded. Some fought on in other formations such as the 'Regiment 24 Dänemark' and the Schalburg Corps.
