Kenya: Over 300 Arrested in Protests Against Ruto Govt's Proposed Tax Hikes | Firstpost Africa

Kenyans are out on the streets to protest the proposed new tax hikes under the Finance Bill 2024. Over 300 protesters have been arrested, while the authorities used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. Amidst the public outcry, Kenya’s government has scrapped some proposed taxes in this year's controversial finance bill, including a 16% levy on bread. Since coming to office in 2022, President William Ruto has introduced several new and unpopular taxes with the aim of eliminating the country’s national debt of nearly $80bn. However, critics fear the latest proposals will stifle economic growth and lead to job losses.
