Lucy Isabelle Marsh - Inflammatus [Rossini Stabat mater] - 1911

Lucy Isabelle Marsh (1878–1956), a talented lyric soprano who also enjoyed a modest career as a church soloist and concert performer, was the star soprano soloist for Victor’s mid-priced purple-label and blue-label series of recordings, which were considered classier than the black-label popular series, but below the elite Red Seal label. She recorded only two Red Seal releases—duets with tenor John McCormack. Marsh turned in consistent workmanlike performances that produced some best sellers, such as “Italian Street Song” on Victor 60031. She also recorded under the pseudonym Anna Howard.

This channel is primarily about vocal emission—aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione—chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it—with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione—the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.
