Showcasing the Administration’s support for the renovation and retrofitting of the Jesse M. Robredo Coliseum (JMRC) as a key evacuation facility in Naga City, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. handed over a Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) worth Php500 million to Mayor Maria Leonor ‘Leni’ Robredo during a site inspection of the ongoing Oplan Kontra Baha operations.

Local officials from Naga City attended the inspection, which presented plans to retrofit and modernize the coliseum. The proposals include installing a community kitchen, improving sanitation facilities, upgrading the roofing system and strengthening the structure. Additional initiatives involve installing foldable bench beds and relocating key facilities on the second floor away from floodwaters.

The funds will also be used to improve the drainage system to prevent flooding and to create dedicated medical-response areas for emergencies. This initiative aims to strengthen the local government’s ability to plan for and respond quickly to natural disasters and crises.

Built in 2010, the ‘Big Dome of the South’ can seat 12,000 people and accommodate up to 15,000 for standing-room events. It hosts sports games, tournaments and other gatherings. Beyond sports, it has served as an essential evacuation and relief center, especially during Severe Tropical Storm ‘Kristine’ in October 2024. The coliseum acted as a key evacuation site for low-lying barangays in Naga City, particularly Barangays Triangulo and Lerma, which were flooded after 700 millimeters of rain fell in just 24 hours — about 2.5 months' worth of rain.
