Taiwan Region's opposition leader Soong Chu-yu, chairman of the People First Party, announced on Thursday in Taipei that he will run for the Taiwan leadership election next January.

"I would like to make an announcement here that Soong Chu-yu is going to formally run for the election," he said during a press conference of the People First Party.

Aged 73, Soong is to start his third bid for the top leader of the island. During a 40-minute speech, he laid out a six-point commitment regarding his governing ideas.

As for the Cross-Strait relationship, Soong proposed the construction of a framework of orderly peaceful development of the two sides.

"Under the premise of equality, mutual benefit and transparency, Taiwan and the mainland should deepen communication and enhance mutual trust," Soong said.

During the 2016 leadership election, Soong is set to face Hung Hsiu-chu, nominate of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), Tsai Ing-wen, chairwoman and nominate of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), as well as independent candidate Shih Ming-teh.
