Do Christmas Trees Come from the Cult of Asherah?

Even if Christmas didn’t start as a pagan holiday, have Christians made it pagan by using pagan decorations like Christmas Trees to celebrate the birth of Christ? Did this practice start as worship of the pagan goddess Asherah? Are we accidentally worshipping false deities when we put up our Christmas trees?
