The LAIFF 2020 presents a discussion about Film Financing. The industry panel consists of Tony Armer, David Thomas, Robert Enriquez and Hal 'Corky' Kessler (bios below) and is hosted by Natasha Marburger, Festival Director.
Tony Armer:
Tony Armer is the Film Commissioner for St. Petersburg Clearwater, Florida. He is an Award Winning Filmmaker and the Founder of the internationally acclaimed Sunscreen Film Festival. He works with hundreds of productions each year.
Tony led the Film Commission to its best year and best 5 year period ever in the 28 year history of the organization. He helped write, develop and Produce the two Bernie the Dolphin films specifically for the St. Petersburg Clearwater, FL area. Those films were released theatrically in 2018 and 2019 and distributed by Lionsgate in North America.
Tony wrote the screenplay for and is producing Can’t Stop the Dawn; starring Christina Ricci (“Monster”, “Z: The Beginning of Everything”), Tom Hopper (“Umbrella Academy, Hitman’s Bodyguard”) and David Dastmalchian (“The Suicide Squad,” “Ant-Man”).
After a successful festival run his Award Winning documentary Running with Demons was distributed worldwide in 2014. His documentary Portrait of a Superhero became a festival darling and won numerous awards in 2018 and 2019.
Tony works closely with film distributors and sales agents attending markets like Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, AFM and more. He has deep and longstanding relationships within the film industry. He has been Producing, Directing, Writing, and creating Film, TV, corporate and digital media content since 1997.
David Thomas:
As a sole proprietor, generates business by development and promotion of unique skill set
Responsible for preparation of private placement documents, financial investment packages, talent contracts, distribution deals and every aspect of motion picture production
Consultation to Broadway theatrical producers regarding film rights for theatrical productions in development that includes attendance at staged readings with star talent
Legal consultation to aggregate film fund financiers including review of legal contracts
Robert Enriquez:
With 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry Robert Enriquez is a veteran of mentoring and building the careers of young filmmakers and Actors. Robert is the West coast Director of the Sunscreen Film Festival. A festival previously backed by the Academy of Motion Picture arts and Sciences (The Oscars)
Robert successfully owns and operates Red Baron Management and Films—A 19 year old Management and Production Company. Clients have starred in many Hollywood films and TV shows such as GLOW, The Last OG, The Office, The Power Project, Straight Outta Compton, 22 Jump Street, The Equalizer, The Carmichael Show, Black-ish, Criminal Minds, LOST, How I met Your Mother, NCIS, and MANY more.
As Director/Producer Robert has made films that have gone on to distribution in dozens of Countries, Has brokered deals with Showtime, Netflix, Lionsgate, and placed in many film festivals—not to mention TONY and EMMY Recognition.
Hal 'Corky' Kessler:
Corky Kessler is a “one stop shop” lawyer for the entertainment industry. In 2017 and 2019, Corky was named top entertainment lawyer in the United States. Corky has successfully worked with governors and US congressmen in several states to implement new laws and federal tax incentives for investment in qualifying film and television projects, which led to Section 181 and Section 199 of the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004. Corky has also been actively involved in the application of Section 168 of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which was signed into law December 2017 and became active January 2018. Section 168 of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act outlined the new incentives for film, television, and theater for five years.
Corky is active in establishing and advising various film funds and film funding sources in North America and is expanding internationally. In October 2012, Corky signed a Memorandum of Understanding with private investors from China for a $200 million co-production deal with the US.
Corky has represented several authors and negotiated publishing deal with several major publishers, including Random House, and Doubleday. He has assembled and built winning teams for more than 30 entertainment and other business ventures. Corky has developed, packaged, and executive produced over 20 feature films including The Sum of Us starring Russell Crowe, which won the Australian Academy Award for Best Film, Human Capital starring Marisa Tomei and Live Schreiber, and Certifiably Jonathan starring Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams, Howie Mandel, Rob Reiner, Jim Carey, Sara Silverman, and others.
