2. Aguada Fort: Goa, a perfect place for holidays, numbers of sightseeing choices which range from nature to historic places. One such is Fort Aguada. An excellent example of Portuguese architecture it was built in the year from 1609 to 12. This fort was constructed with the purpose of restricting the entry into the River Mandavi, so as to control the political threats.

At a distance of 18 kms away from Panaji, it is situated at the top of a hill near the River Mandavi. This fort has received its name from the name Portuguese Aguada which means water. This was owing to the availability of freshwater springs inside. As this fort provided an extensive view of the sea and the neighboring villages, it was used one of the important forts. It had an elaborate defense system too. With double walls and two gates, this fort was strategically designed to keep enemies at bay.

It has now a lighthouse, which can be seen in night from as far as Mapusa and Aldona. At the center of the fort, there is a huge tank with various underground chambers. There is a small door which leads to these chambers and tank, further inside. However, this area is now not accessible to public. It has been covered with concrete slabs.

This fort has been also popular as one of the largest forts of Goa. Recently, some of the part of this fort has been used to build a Central jail. Some of its part has been converted into a luxury beach resort, namely Fort Aguada Hotel. This hotel is quite close to another popular 5-star accommodation, Vivanta by Taj.

3. Fontainhas: Located in Panjim, Fontainhas, also known as Goa’s Latin Quarter, is flanked by an ancient creek called Ourem Creek to the east and the Altinho hills with springs to the west. Many tourists eschew this heritage colony for the spectacular beaches and waves of Goa’s coastline, but its colorful and fascinating sights are more than worth visiting.
Goa was colonized by the Hindus, Muslims, and Portuguese, the latter leaving the biggest influence here, by far, which is clearly evident in Fontainhas. Fontainhas was founded in the late 18th century by a wealthy Portuguese named Antonio Joao de Sequeira. He used this land for coconut plantations. But, in the early 1800s, due to the spread of epidemic in the Old Goa, the Portuguese government headquarters was shifted to Panjim. As a result, this area was transformed into the residential area for Portuguese administrative officers and rulers. In 1984, UNESCO recognized Fontainhas as a Heritage Zone.

A common visual reminder of Portuguese remnants here are the houses and cottages built in colonial architecture and painted in fluorescents and pastels. In addition to that, the names of the narrow cobbled streets can also be traced back to the Portuguese time in Goa, for instance, Rua 31 de Janeira (31st January Road) is named after the day when Portugal got independence from Spain on January 31, 1640; and 18th June Street is named after the day in 1946 that marked the beginning of the end of Portuguese rule in the country.
